Surge
makes summer finals
Recovering
from a slow start to the Vic Water Polo summer season, Melbourne
Surge managed to make it back-to-back finals campaigns in 2006.
Unfortunately the club went down in their first finals match against
Powerhouse, but the taste of finals water polo has given the team
the will to strive for even better things in 2007.... watch this

Surge
do Melbourne proud in Montreal
The
Melbourne Surge water polo club has exceeded their team goals at
the 1st World Outgames in Montreal and finished sixth out of thirteen
teams in the international water polo competition. Seeding rounds
saw the team beat Toronto and Manchester but go down to Montreal
ACC1, resulting in the team playing it out for 4th, 5th or 6th overall.
Sydney Stingers again beat their southern neighbours and a hard
fought game against Montreal ACC2 saw the game go into extra time
with Montreal the eventual winner.

Surge
rock the Glamourheads/Roughies swim meet
Melbourne
Surge water polo players were stand-out performers at the Glamourheads/Roughies
swim meet held at the Richmond swim centre on 22 April. In a warm
up for the 2006 winter water polo season, Darren McClafferty, Todd
Matthews, Nick Ward, Ross Wallis and Lachlan Bird set new PB’s
and new Surge records for all swims they competed in. While playing
down rumours that the team was peaking too early for the serious
competition that will come with the start of the long and arduous
polo season and journey to Montreal in July, all swimmers assured
team mates that this was just a taste of things to come.
Results: Darren McClafferty – 50m free (Bronze
29.07) 50m breast (Gold 42.00) 100m free (Bronze 1:09.01), Lachlan
Bird – 50m free (Bronze 28.25) 50m breast (Gold 40.81) 50m
fly (Bronze 33.81) 100m free (Silver 1:04.74), Todd Matthews –
50m back (Silver 38.27) 50m breast (Bronze 44.17), Nick Ward –
50m free (Bronze 31.07) 50m back (Silver 39.59) 50m fly (Bronze

Lachie
takes out inaugural Melbourne Surge OWS title
WA
import, Lachlan Bird, has led a quality field and secured the inaugural
Melbourne Surge Open Water Swim Championship. With wins in all three
swims to date, he holds an unassailable lead heading into the final
swim of the series. Richard Ward has a stranglehold on second position,
showing continued improvement throughout the season. Some may attribute
this to his new Orca wettie or favourable race conditions, but Richard
swears that all his training has finally paid dividends. Todd Matthews'
has blamed a poor Saturday work schedule for his third place, competing
in only one swim. This is still a better showing than Darren McClafferty
who talked about it all summer but failed to enter any of the swims.
The final swim
of the series is at the Middle Brighton Baths on 12 March.

Melbourne
Surge vs Sydney Stingers - The Grudge Match
The Annual Midsumma Grudge match
was held between the Melbourne Surge (formerly G-Sharks) and the
Sydney Stingers on 28 January 2006. Sydney took the DT’s Trophy
winning 6-5 despite a late charge from the home heroes. Our very
special thanks go to Tabitha Turlington and Pussy Willow for commentating
the match. More...

Streetwear
and Swimwear Parade - Pt II
On 8 December 2005 our boys strutted their stuff as part of a Street
and Swimwear parade held at the Market Hotel. Special guest stars
included Katie Underwood, Tyger Girl, Time Squared, Malika, and
Rachel Berger. Our huge thanks to Dean Murphy for coordinating the
event. A good sum of money was raised towards our surge towards
Montreal and $1,000 was donated to the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard.
Well done all!

Women's
Team Launch
On 30 October 2005 we made a strong attempt to launch
a womens’ team. We had some good support from a number of
girls but we’re still looking for more before we can sure
up a team. Register your interest by emailing women@melbournesurge.org
and look out for the next women’s team launch.

Bowling
Night
On 9 October 2005 we kicked off our
Montreal fundraising with a Bowling night held at Strike Bowling
Bar on Chapel Street. It was the first time Jez had ever been bowling,
but the rest of the team had more ball experience. Everyone did
well. Alcohol helped.
