About
Us
The Melbourne Surge Water Polo Club are an inclusive,
competitive and active team of people who play water polo and have
heaps of fun. We are predominantly a gay club but everyone is welcome.
Our coach is the fabulous Leanne Kelly who has had
many years of playing and coaching water polo at a top level. She
is AWESOME.... and sometimes very loud.
The club competes in the winter and summer competitions
held by the Victorian Water Polo Association at the Melbourne Sports
and Aquatic Centre. For our current games schedule please visit
our calendar. Team trips are also made
between Melbourne and Sydney for clashes with our sister club, the
Sydney Stingers.
Out of the pool, a lot of the team gets together
regularly for parties, fundraisers and more.
Our History
Melbourne's first gay water polo team was formed
in October 2001 by Owen Wyte and was originally known as The Crabs.
This team was supported by the Xchange Hotel, and the "Xchange
Crabs" bathers were very popular at the Gay Games VI in Sydney
2002.
After the Sydney Gay Games the water polo team merged
with the Glamourhead Sharks Aquatics club where the team took on
the name, G-Sharks. In 2006 the team decided to egg-beat again with
our own two feet and Melbourne Surge was born. We are once again
proudly independent.
Over the years we have received a great deal of
publicity including coverage in all of Melbourne’s Gay and
Lesbian newspapers, a 4 page spread in DNA magazine and two segments
on Bent TV’s sporting program “The Dressing Room”.
